  • A leaker has confirmed an earlier report that OnePlus is working on a phone powered by MediaTek.
  • The phone is believed to be equipped with the flagship SoC Dimensity 1200.

OnePlus has relied on Snapdragon silicon since its inception, from the OnePlus One to the OnePlus 9 series with Qualcomm chipsets. We heard a report earlier this year that the manufacturer was going to use MediaTek Power for the first time, and now another source has apparently confirmed that claim.

The Weibo Leaker digital chat station has claimed OnePlus is preparing a device with the Dimensity 1200 chipset (MT6893), although the tipster did not provide any further details in the post. Check out the rough machine-translated version below.

This post largely agrees with Android CentralThe March report claims that the OnePlus Nord 2 ships with a Dimensity 1200 processor. The only information missing from the Digital Chat Station leak is whether it is actually the Nord 2.

For the most part, the Dimensity 1200 would be a pretty solid upgrade over Nord’s Snapdragon 765G. It contains an octa-core CPU (four Cortex-A78 cores, four Cortex-A55 cores), a maximum refresh rate of 168 Hz, software-controlled ray tracing support, Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6 and 5G + 5G dual SIM Support. You also get a powerful paper photo / video experience that supports 200 megapixel recording, staggered 4K HDR video recording, and AV1 decoding.

A OnePlus phone with the new MediaTek flagship SoC wouldn’t have mmWave support (MediaTek’s 5G is currently below 6 GHz), while the Dimensity 1200 uses the same Mali-G77 MP9 GPU as last year’s Dimensity 1000 series. This GPU lagged behind those of the Snapdragon 865 series and Exynos 990 on paper, and will likely lag behind the latest upper-middle-range silicon from Qualcomm and Samsung.

Still, MediaTek silicon has a reputation for being slightly cheaper than its well-known counterparts. Hopefully the same goes for the Dimensity 1200, and OnePlus can pass those savings on to the consumer.
