Amazon is reportedly going to reopen six warehouses in France on Tuesday after an agreement has been reached with the unions, as at a time during the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.
The e-commerce giant plays an important role in shipping goods to people around the world affected by home orders to stop the spread of COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus. But Amazon closed its camps in France in April after a French court ruled in favor of workers who were concerned about inadequate protection.
The compromise, confirmed by both Amazon and union leaders, reflects the difficulties associated with reconciling economic activity and security. Nations, businesses and health agencies are trying to find the best way to let people leave their homes without causing further deaths. COVID-19 has killed more than 300,000 people worldwide.
The camps are gradually reopening with new protection for the 10,000 workers in France, and Amazon will not contest the case before the French Supreme Court Reports in the New York Times and Reuters. The new regulations include weekly meetings between management and workers to assess safety and shorter shifts to allow time for social distance during shift changes.
Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
