- All of Warner Bros.’s 2021 films will debut on HBO Max.
- At the same time, the films also end up in theaters, but you don’t have to go there to see one.
- This is a seismic shift not just for Warner Bros. and HBO Max, but for the entire industry.
Today Warner Bros. Pictures Group announced that it will drastically change the way new movies are released in 2021. The studio announced that every single movie it has on its 2021 calendar so far will debut on streaming service HBO Max. The films continue to be shown in theaters, but now you don’t have to wait to watch them at your home. Watching the movies on HBO Max costs no more than the usual monthly subscription fee.

Warner’s upcoming films include Wonder Woman 1984, the next sequel to the Matrix series, the next sequel to the Conjuring series, the Dune remake, a new Mortal Kombat movie, the long-awaited Godzilla vs Kong, and many more. All of these films have an exclusive month-long window on HBO Max that coincides with the theater releases.
2021 films on HBO max
The first film to debut with the new model will be the sequel to Wonder Woman on December 25, 2020.
After the one-month period has expired, the films will resume their theatrical release but exit HBO Max. After that, physical media and third-party streaming releases will continue as normal.
This now makes HBO Max a unique proposition in the streaming video industry. No other streaming service offers movies that are currently in theaters, especially at no additional cost to consumers.
HBO Max and Warner Bros. are both owned by Warner Media from AT&T. That way, this partnership is possible. Films from other studios are unlikely to adopt this model. Coupled with Disney’s commitment to streaming, this seismic shift in the industry’s view of online streaming could mark a new era for movie releases.
HBO Max is currently available in the US but will launch in Latin America and Europe in the second half of 2021. Interestingly, HBO Max also announced today that it is ending its seven-day free trial for new subscribers. If you want to give HBO Max a chance now, you’ll have to pay from the start.
