OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro review: What should have been

Update: September 24, 2020 (3:25 a.m. ET): OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro receive another major update in the form of OxygenOS 11 Open Beta 2, based on Android 11.

Shortly after the first open beta, the latest version brings fixes for Google Assistant errors, off-center icons in the call log, and blank screens in the support app. The most interesting tweak, however, concerns the environmental mode customization options. Now a new feature called “Canvas” is listed that “can automatically draw a wireframe image based on a lock screen photo on your phone”.

In particular, the availability of Open Beta 2 in India may be delayed “for technical reasons”. However, OnePlus confirms that download links will be added to the forum thread as soon as possible.

OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro updates

  • Current stable version: Android 10
  • When will OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro get Android 11? September 2020 (estimated)

OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro launched on April 14, 2020. Both shipped with the latest version of Android: Android 10. We expect both devices to receive at least two major Android updates in the future – Android 11 in 2020 and Android 12 in 2021.

Days after the phones launched, OnePlus rolled out the Oxygen OS 10.5.4 update for the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro. It was a minor update, but it brought Google’s Live Caption feature to the phones. It also improved support for the OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z earbuds, tweaked the cameras and fingerprint sensor, improved system stability, and much more.

However, a number of users reported the appearance of a green hue on the displays of their phones. Some also reported a black crush problem where dark areas of the screen lost detail.

OnePlus then rolled out Oxygen OS 10.5.5 for both OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro. The update fixed the shade of green issue for some, but the black crush issue persisted.

The changelog was also very curious about the display problems. The only reference to the display was a pointer that said “Optimized Display Effects”, which does not clearly indicate the problem of the green tint or the black crush.

In early May, OnePlus launched Oxygen OS 10.5.6.IN11AA for OnePlus 8 Pro and 10.5.5.IN21AA for OnePlus 8. However, the changelog did not clearly verify a solution to the display problems on the OnePlus 8 Pro mentioned general system, camera and network improvements.

However, some users who received this update were not very happy with it. A Reddit user said the update fixed the problem with the green tone on the OnePlus 8 Pro when turning DC dimming on, but it reappears when DC dimming is turned off. Another user on the OnePlus forums reports that the OnePlus 8 Pro’s camera has deteriorated after the update, producing images with random flares.

According to reports, OnePlus began rolling out an update on May 29 to disable the color filter camera on the OnePlus 8 Pro not just in China but worldwide. The move came after it was recently discovered that the playful color filter camera on the back of the OnePlus 8 Pro can be used as a kind of X-ray camera. The update was attached to Oxygen OS 10.5.9.

However, the update mentioned above was short-lived as the company then pulled and confirmed it Android police that it was accidentally rolled out.

On June 4th, OnePlus released an extensive update for OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro. The phones have been encoded with HEVC so that users can record videos of the same quality as the traditional H.264 codec without taking up much storage space. A number of system optimizations, the May security patch, and more have also been added.

In addition, the X-ray image functions of the OnePlus 8 Pro’s color filter camera have been restored. OnePlus accidentally removed the controversial feature with an update in May. So if you happened to have the OnePlus 8 Pro update installed that turned the feature off, you can just apply that OTA to get it back.

In the August update, the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro received the security patch for August 2020, optimizations for the 16-megapixel selfie camera, some bug fixes and improvements to the system stability.

Early adopters had the opportunity to install Open Beta 1 from Oxygen OS based on Android 11 in September. The beta brought a number of improvements to the system’s UI, environment display and headroom improvements, themes were also added in Zen mode, and a quick settings tile was retained in Dark mode.
