Recognition: Hadlee Simons / Android Authority

Today’s smartphones mostly have sufficient storage space. Even budget phones offer 32GB, 64GB, or even 128GB of storage space for gaming. However, clearing your phone’s or app’s cache can still free up a lot of storage space and fix some performance issues.

It’s been a long time since we cleared our phone cache, but that asked us if Android Authority The readers are in the same boat. This is how you voted in this poll.

When was the last time you cleared your phone cache?

Results

We published the survey on March 3rd and asked users when was the last time they cleared either their phone cache in general or an app’s cache. Just over 6,100 votes were counted and it looks like two options won the lion’s share of the vote.

Almost half of the readers surveyed said they had never cleared their phone cache. We suspect these users were either happy with the way their phone handled things, or they didn’t investigate how it worked at first.

The second most popular option was on the other end of the spectrum, as nearly 22% of respondents said they cleared their phone cache within the last week.

There’s a big gap from second most popular option to third place. 9.1% of voters say they last cleared their cache over a year ago. In fourth place were people who did this in the last month (8.6%), followed by people who did this a few months ago (7.4%), and people within the last 12 months (4.8%) ).

Remarks

  • Joe Black: I only clear the cache if there are problems with an app that couldn’t be cleaned up by itself, or if it gets corrupted when updating the app to a newer version due to a migration problem.
  • Montisaquadeis: phone cache itself doesn’t last long BUT I do app cache all the time as it helps fix issues I encounter with certain apps
  • M Prindle: I have an odd app issue every now and then and I am going to clear the cache for it, but I have never done a full cache flush for the phone on this device.
  • EeZeEpEe: The Google Files app usually suggests that I clean up “junk” for myself once a week to every other week.
  • Nikolas Spiridakis: I use SD Maid to clear the app cache and some other caches that require root to clear
  • 🇦🇺Marshall: Phone cache: extremely rare. App cache: daily.
  • Michael Gibb: I have a phone with 128GB of internal storage and a 200GB microSD card, and yet I clean up the cache on my phone every few days. Taking good care of your phone can help extend its life.
  • Alessandro87: Cache is there for a REASON. cleaning it every day or every week is nonsense…. When it runs out, the phone will use more battery to download / recreate each file. and guess what? This is consuming CPU / Nandmemory. I think ic could be cleared every 30/90 days … no less, no more than this timeframe
  • marque2: Every now and then I have an app that seems shaky and if restarting doesn’t help I’ll clear the app cache, but I don’t do this nearly as often as I did a few years ago. In addition to having more memory, the apps I use (I’m a pretty normal app person, don’t download much) may become more stable.
