A rival to upcoming Chromecast?
- Amazon is reportedly working on a Fire TV Stick Lite gadget.
- This would apparently replace the current standard Fire TV stick.
- We could see the device tomorrow at Amazon’s hardware event.
It is widely expected that Google will launch a new Chromecast dongle next week that supposedly includes Android TV and is priced at around $ 50 to $ 60. This may not be the only new cheap streaming gadget from a major brand, however.
WinFuture reports that Amazon is working on a so-called Fire TV Stick Lite device that could replace the standard Fire TV Stick. There’s no word on technical details, but product images point to a redesigned remote control with a brand new TV button.
We’re not entirely sure what a TV button would do, but the release indicates that Amazon is working with broadcasters to make their content available on streaming devices. Presumably, it would be a keyboard shortcut for certain content back then, similar to the pesky Netflix buttons that can be seen on a wide variety of streaming remotes these days.
Otherwise, the Fire TV Stick Lite remote will lack the volume buttons and the on / off switch on the 4K Stick, bringing them in line with older FHD models.
There’s no word on pricing, but we’re assuming the new dongle will be available under the Fire TV Stick 4K’s current $ 50 tag. And between devices like the upcoming Sabrina Chromecast dongle and Xiaomi’s Mi TV Stick offering, those looking for cheap streaming options seem to be spoiled for choice.
We’ll likely have more details tomorrow (September 24th) as Amazon has confirmed that there will be a hardware event.
