TL; DR

  • It looks like the specs for Mediatek’s upcoming flagship SoC have been leaked.
  • The so-called Dimensity 2000 will apparently use a Cortex-X core for the first time.
  • It is also said to contain Arm’s latest GPU.

Mediatek’s Dimensity chipsets have traditionally held their own in the mid-range and budget segment, although they have not ousted Qualcomm as the preferred supplier in the flagship segment. The company previously announced its intention to move into the high-end space, and a new leak suggests that next year’s flagship silicon may be on the watch.

The common Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station has leaked specs that appear to be the next flagship of the Dimensity chipset, dubbed Dimensity 2000 in previous leaks. In terms of actual specs, the new chipset is geared towards a 4nm TSMC design and a tri-cluster octa-core CPU.

The CPU layout supposedly consists of a high-performance Cortex-X2 core with 3 GHz, three Cortex-A710 cores for medium tasks and four Cortex-A510 cores for power-hungry tasks. This would be the first time Mediatek has taken over the Cortex-X CPU as it has skipped the Cortex-X1 for its current Dimensity 1200 chipset. It should be roughly on par with the Snapdragon 888 successor and the Exynos 2100 in the CPU arena.

Meanwhile, the Weibo leaker claims that the new processor will feature an Arm Mali-G710 MC10 GPU. This is Arm’s latest top-of-the-line smartphone GPU that picks up where the Mali-G78 left off. Arm previously stated that the Mali-G710 offers a 20% increase in performance and efficiency over the Mali-G78, as well as a 35% increase in machine learning performance.

This graphics silicon is said to be significantly more powerful than the Dimensity 1200, which uses an older Mali-G77 MP9 GPU. We assume, however, that it will only be on par with the Exynos 2100 (assuming the same specs) since the Samsung chip offered a Mali-G78 MP14 GPU.

However, a smartphone processor has more to offer than just a CPU and GPU, so we’re definitely excited to see what Mediatek has up its sleeve in terms of camera capabilities, multimedia capabilities, modem support, and machine learning. The company is expected to reveal the alleged Dimensity 2000 SoC in the fourth quarter of 2021, so we should know more in a few months.
