A flagship smartphone for under $600

Honor v40 render 1

  • Honor announced the V40.
  • It is the company’s first smartphone as an independent company.
  • The launch is currently limited to China, but Honor isn’t ruling out the possibility of global availability.

The honor is no longer under the influence of Huawei, and while that comes with US pressure, not getting support from a major smartphone maker is also a daunting prospect. Nevertheless, the first device from its new era is here now.

The Honor V40 was largely developed when Honor was part of its former parent company, and its aesthetics suggest so too. At the front, the phone has the oval cutout with two cameras like the P40 Pro, while the camera housing on the back, which is aligned at the top left, is also reminiscent of the Huawei flagship. That said, there is enough to distinguish it from the Honor V30.

It sports a 6.72-inch OLED display that tapers around the edges, but offers a refresh rate of 120 Hz and a sampling rate of 300 Hz – both of which are advantages over current Huawei products. The 10-bit panel also supports HDR10, while two speakers should enhance the binge-watching and gaming experience.

The Honor V40 offers Kirin silicon for the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 Plus chipset with 8 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of internal storage. This cocktail is powered by a 4,000 mAh battery that can be charged with 66 W cable or 50 W cable.

As for the camera’s smart, the Honor V40’s rear array is dominated by a 1 / 1.56-inch 50-megapixel RYYB primary camera that, like the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra, stands on top. While the design is exciting, the rest of the array isn’t. There is also an 8MP Ultrawide and a 2MP Macro Snapper. A 16-megapixel selfie camera is located next to a secondary sensor in the oval selfie camera cutout.

Honor V40: price and availability

The Honor V40 will be limited to China for now. The phone will be priced at 3,599 yuan (~ $ 556) for the 128GB version and 3,999 yuan (~ $ 618) for the 256GB option. The color options include Magic Night Black, Titanium Silver, and Rose Gold, which are a little warmer than Apple’s taste.

When asked about the details of an international debut, Honor said Android Authority in an email that “many things are going on” but did not deny or confirm potential availability outside of China. It also remains unclear whether the phone will come with Google Mobile Services should it see a broader launch.
