1. In the heights
This upcoming film is by Lin Manuel-Miranda, creator of Broadway hit Hamilton and playwright Quiara Alegría Hudes. The following is the story of the bodega owner Usnavi, played by Anthony Ramos. Usnavi, a Washington Heights resident, is battling his grind. If he inherits his grandmother’s fortune, he will face a tough choice. With the director of Crazy Rich Asians, Jon M. Chu, at the helm, In the Heights is the film adaptation of Miranda’s 2007 musical of the same name.
Miranda’s projects always have a fun twist on them while making a solid social comment. With In the Heights taking a look at the tough life of immigrants in America, it has the promise to be a great watch. Melissa Barrera, Corey Hawkins, Leslie Grace, Dascha Polanco, Stephanie Beatriz, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Olga Merediz and Jimmy Smits will also be seen in the heights. In the Heights will be released on HBO Max (and the theaters) on June 11, 2021.
2. The Lord of the Rings
Amazon wanted a Game of Thrones sized hit, so it was about one of the biggest fantasy IPs out there. In Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings” series, the story begins thousands of years before the events in JRR Tolkien’s books “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings”. We’re going to see a lot more of the timeline of the events of the LOTR universe, with a cast that knows characters we know as well as a ton of new ones.
The Lord of the Rings series is currently in development and Amazon has officially announced 20 cast members including Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Nazanin Boniadi, Tom Budge, Morfydd Clark and others. Several other big stars joining the cast have also been talked about in multiple reports and rumors. The Amazon Prime Video series is currently in production and has a release window of 2021 but no exact release date.
3. The suicide squad
The suicide squad gets a second chance, this time with James Gunn as director. With a new look, several new cast members, and Gunn bringing his Guardians of the Galaxy-style charm to DC, the movie looks like it’s taking a much lighter approach than the first Suicide Squad movie. The premise remains similar – caged super villains with armed explosives in their skulls go on missions with the promise of a reduced sentence.
The cast includes Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Peter Capaldi and more. After the success of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, DC films now have higher expectations to live up to. However, this one already seems to be a winner. The suicide squad will arrive at HBO Max (and the theaters) on August 6, 2021.
4. Loki
Loki has always been a fan favorite character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and now he’s getting his own show on Disney Plus. The show will follow the god of mischief following the events of Avengers: Endgame. The last we saw of him was when he escaped with the Tesseract in Endgame, which means this show will follow Loki as we saw him in the first Avengers movie in 2012.
Of course, Tom Hiddleston is back to play the character. Other cast members include Owen Wilson as Mobius M. Mobius, Sophia D. Martino, Cailey Fleming, Jamie Alexander, Sasha Lane and others. Rick and Morty writer Michael Waldron is on board as creator and writer, and Kate Herron will direct. Loki will be released on Disney Plus on June 11, 2021.
5. The incantation: The devil made me do it
It’s a great new horror franchise with seven films so far. The Conjuration: The Devil Made Me Do It It is the eighth film in the universe and the third to be titled “Conjuration”. It will loosely follow the 1981 murder trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, who claimed a demon possessed him when he killed his landlord.
Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are back playing Ed and Lorraine Warren. Other actors are Ruairi O’Connor, Sarah Catherine Hook and Julian Hilliard. Michael Chaves will direct the horror film. The Conjuring films have been big box office hits before, so it will be interesting to see how the film fares with a simultaneous theatrical release and HBO Max release for June 4th, 2021.
6. Cowboy bebop
Netflix gives the popular cowboy bebop anime the live-action treatment. While Netflix’s take on Death Note received a rather lukewarm fan response, Cowboy Bebop looks pretty promising. The series will follow a number of bounty hunters aboard the spaceship Bebop. It’s a western room so you will see these cowboys on their adventures across the galaxy.
The cast looks fantastic too: John Cho plays Spike Speigel, Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black, Alex Hassell as Vicious, Daniella Pineda as Faye Valentine and Elena Satine as Julia. The director of the original anime, Shinichiro Watanabe, is on board as a creative advisor. That’s not all; The composer Yoko Kanno returns to set the series too! Javier Grillo-Marxuac will act as executive producer. The series will hit Netflix sometime in 2021, and we expect an announcement of the trailer and release date soon.
7th Army of the Dead
After the success of the Justice League, Zack Snyder brings us Army of the Dead. A sequel to Dawn of the Dead, this Netflix movie follows a group of mercenaries who enter the quarantine zone of a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas. A mix of crime, action adventure, and heist genres, the film is sure to get your adrenaline pumping.
The cast is fantastic, with Dave Bautista at the helm. Other performers include Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera, Garret Dillahunt, Raúl Castillo, Omari Hardwick, Tig Notaro, Huma Qureshi, Hiroyuki Sanada and others. Netflix is reportedly looking to turn the Dawn of the Dead universe into a franchise, and this film could be the first of many. Army of the Dead will be released on Netflix on May 21, 2021.
