We talk about AI like it’s a tidal wave coming for us in the future. Will it take our jobs? Will it become our boss? We’re so busy staring at the horizon that we’ve failed to notice our feet are already wet.
The biggest impacts of artificial intelligence aren’t in the splashy demos of robot assistants. They’re invisible. AI is already here, embedded in the infrastructure of our daily lives, running the logistics, curating our realities, and even monitoring our heartbeats. It’s in the systems we now take for granted, and it’s already created a new set of very human problems.
This isn’t about what AI will do. This is about what it’s already doing.
1. It’s Why Your Food Arrives in 30 Minutes (and Why the Restaurant Isn’t Real)
Here’s a scenario. It’s Friday night. You open a delivery app and order from a new, highly-rated burger joint called “The Burger Shack.” The food arrives quickly, and it’s good. You like it so much you decide to walk there the next day. But when you plug the address into your map, it takes you to… an industrial park? Or, even weirder, to a chain restaurant like Red Robin.
You’ve just discovered a “ghost kitchen.”
This is the new face of the restaurant industry, and it’s built entirely by AI. A ghost kitchen, also known as a cloud kitchen or virtual restaurant, is a delivery-only food business. It has no dining room, no waitstaff, and no storefront. It is, quite literally, a “commercial-grade facility” or a “shared kitchen space” designed for one purpose: to fulfill online orders as fast as possible.
This business model simply could not exist without AI.
The ghost kitchen itself is just a “node” in a vast, AI-driven logistics network. The apps we use—DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub—aren’t just digital menus; they are some of the most complex, real-time supply chain platforms on the planet.
Every second, they are solving a high-stakes, real-world version of the classic “Traveling Salesman Problem”. This is a famous computer science puzzle about finding the most efficient route between a set of points. Now, multiply that by tens of thousands of drivers, restaurants, and hungry customers, all moving at the same time. The AI is constantly calculating optimal routes, predicting demand at a neighborhood-by-neighborhood level, and managing inventory.
The ghost kitchen is the logical endpoint of this optimization. From the AI’s perspective, a traditional restaurant is full of inefficiencies: high-rent locations, decor, front-of-house staff. The ghost kitchen strips all that away, leaving only the “production facility.” It’s the system at its most brutally efficient.
But here’s where this invisible logic starts to have very visible consequences.
During the pandemic, cities like San Francisco saw their beloved local restaurants getting crushed by the 30% commission fees these apps were charging. In a very human attempt to help, the city capped the commission at 15% for independent restaurants.
But the AI running the delivery platform isn’t programmed to “help local restaurants.” It’s programmed to maximize efficiency and profit.
So, how did the AI respond? Research showed that the platforms’ algorithms simply changed their behavior. They allegedly began to “demote” the independent, price-capped restaurants in their search results and promotional spots. Instead, they prioritized the big chain restaurants (which weren’t covered by the cap) or, you guessed it, their own partnered ghost kitchens.
The law, designed to save small businesses, may have inadvertently made them invisible. The result was plunging orders for the very restaurants the law was meant to help, leading to an outcry from both restaurant owners and drivers. The AI didn’t break the law; it just optimized its way around it, revealing its true priority: the health of the network, not the individual businesses within it.
2. It’s the Reason You’re Bored With Netflix
We’ve all been there. You finish a long day, collapse on the couch, and open Netflix. You scroll. And scroll. You’re presented with thousands of movies and shows, yet you have the distinct feeling you’ve seen them all before. You feel “stuck in a rut”.
This isn’t a failure of creativity; it’s a feature of the algorithm.
That recommendation engine is, of course, a form of AI. Its stated job is to analyze your viewing habits and “personalize content suggestions”. But “personalization” is a friendly-sounding word for a cold, statistical process.
The AI’s primary goal is not your “joy of discovery”. Its primary goal is retention. It needs to make sure you don’t cancel your subscription. The safest way to do that is to find out what you’ll reliably watch—a pattern, a genre, a specific actor—and feed you endless variations of it.
As one source notes, this is a form of “intermittent reinforcement” designed to stimulate “excessive use as a compulsive behavior”. You watched a gritty British detective show? The AI’s logic concludes you must only want gritty British detective shows. The “joy of discovery”, the happy accident of stumbling onto something new and brilliant, is engineered out of the process, replaced by the deep, boring comfort of predictability.
You are in a “filter bubble.”
That feeling of being “stuck” on Netflix is the most benign version of this mechanism. In its more powerful forms—on platforms like TikTok or YouTube—this same algorithmic logic can have much darker consequences.
We don’t have to speculate. In 2024, internal TikTok documents revealed in a lawsuit gave us the smoking gun.
TikTok’s own research found that “compulsive usage correlates with a slew of negative mental health effects”. Their internal documents listed them: “loss of analytical skills, memory formation, contextual thinking, conversational depth, empathy, and increased anxiety”.
Their researchers knew that users are “placed into ‘filter bubbles’ after 30 minutes of use in one sitting”.
This isn’t just the political echo chamber we always hear about (a concern that some research, ironically, suggests might be exaggerated). This is a mental health filter bubble. The platform’s own studies found that the algorithm could quickly lead users down rabbit holes of content promoting eating disorders, often called “thinspiration,” as well as content related to self-harm and depression.
That bored, “stuck” feeling you get while scrolling is the canary in the coal mine. It’s the tiny, everyday symptom of a powerful algorithmic gaze that, when optimized purely for engagement, can curate a reality—and for some, a mental health crisis.
And the technology is evolving. YouTube, for example, is experimenting with AI-driven hosts that will “integrate narratives” into music discovery, “blurring the line between streaming and podcasting”. Soon, the AI won’t just recommend a song; it will tell you the story about it, shaping your emotional context and further deepening its role as our primary curator of culture.
3. It’s That ‘Check Engine’ Light on Your Wrist
“My watch was very insistent that something was wrong. Saved my life!!”.
“Yeah I woke up to AFIB alert this week. Dr wanted me in immediately. I now have an appt with cardiology dept for a 48-72 hour at home heart monitor”.
“Afib in the middle of the night in September. Slapped on my Apple Watch and got the reading. ER visit and cardioversion”.
These are real stories from real people. And they represent one of a profound shift in our daily lives. For decades, health wearables were for the “Quantified Self” movement—fitness buffs and bio-hackers tracking their steps, sleep, and marathon times to optimize performance.
That’s not what’s happening here. The AI in an Apple Watch or an Oura ring has become a passive, 24/7 medical monitor. It’s not just a counter; it’s an analyst.
The AI models in these devices have been trained on vast datasets of cardiovascular health. They are designed to do one thing exceptionally well: spot irregularities. The AI is passively listening to your heart rhythm, and it can detect the subtle, often-unfelt patterns of Atrial Fibrillation (AFib), a condition that can lead to strokes.
This is a “check engine” light for the human body. It’s an early-warning system that is, without exaggeration, saving lives by spotting a medical event “before and after” it becomes a full-blown crisis.
But what is the psychological price of a 24/7 check engine light?
For every life-saving story, there is a counter-narrative of anxiety. The same forums bubbling with gratitude are also filled with a new, very modern angst.
“Is anyone else tired of their oura ring?” one user asks. “I’m constantly checking my stress levels… In the morning the first thing I do when I open my eyes is open the oura app to see my sleep and that makes me decide how I feel that day.”
Another user pinpoints the origin of their anxiety: “I remember my health anxiety starting when I bought my first Fitbit 10 years ago, I was checking my heart rate pretty obsessively.”
This is the flip side of the “Quantified Self.” The data is supposed to be empowering, but it can easily become an obsessive feedback loop.
The deepest change here isn’t the data itself; it’s the shift in authority. We are, bit by bit, outsourcing interoception—our innate, internal sense of our own body’s state. That user put it perfectly: “I feel like I don’t even listen to my own body anymore I just rely on what the ring tells me.”
We’ve all done it. We wake up feeling pretty good, but the “Sleep Score” says 62, and suddenly, we feel tired. We’ve begun to trust the AI’s analysis of our data more than our own lived experience. This has created a new, complex, and messy relationship with our own health, one that the medical field is still trying to understand. (How many doctors have rolled their eyes when a patient walks in with a spreadsheet of their Fitbit data?).
This technology is both a medical miracle and a new source of anxiety, all at thesame time.
4. It’s the ‘Phantom Traffic’ (and the Reason You Avoided It)
We place an almost blind trust in the AI in our pocket. And sometimes, that trust is spectacularly betrayed.
There’s a story from a driver in Australia that perfectly captures this. He was following his Google Maps directions in a state forest, and the map told him to “turn off a decent gravel path onto a side road.” He obeyed. “It looked OK to start with,” he wrote, “but by the time I realized I was in trouble it was too late. The road degraded to a goat track.”
He was stuck, with no cell service, all because he trusted the AI.
We’ve all had a “goat track” moment—where the map insists on a turn that leads to a dead end, a stairway, or a road that just doesn’t exist.
So why do we keep trusting it? Because 99.9% of the time, the AI is solving a problem we don’t even know exists.
The perfect example: the “phantom traffic jam”.
You know the one. You’re on the highway, and traffic grinds to a halt. You sit. You creep forward. You’re furious, assuming there must be a huge accident ahead. But 20 minutes later, everything clears up… for no reason at all. There’s no accident, no construction, no police car.
That was a phantom jam. They are created by us.
It starts with one driver, miles ahead, who taps their brakes unnecessarily. The driver behind them has to brake a little harder. The next driver brakes harder still. This braking creates a “shockwave” that ripples backward through the line of cars, amplifying as it goes. A mile behind that first brake-tap, cars are forced to a complete, inexplicable stop. Even a speed trap alert on Waze can trigger one, as dozens of cars suddenly slam their brakes.
A single human driver cannot see this happening. In fact, you are the traffic.
But the AI in Google Maps or Waze can see it. It’s collecting speed data from thousands of phones in real-time. It sees the shockwave forming and can immediately re-route you—”Turn right on Main St.”—to navigate you around the jam before you even hit it.
It’s an invisible solution to an invisible problem.
And perhaps the most successful, most-embedded AI in our lives is one we completely forgot about: the spam filter.
The first spam email was sent in 1978. By all rights, our inboxes should be a flaming, unusable dumpster of malicious links and ads. The only reason they’re not is AI.
This isn’t just a simple filter looking for “Viagra.” Modern spam filters use complex machine learning models—Naive Bayes, Support Vector Machines, and Deep Learning Neural Networks. They perform “feature extraction”, analyzing thousands of signals at once: the sender’s reputation, the structure of the links, the grammar, the time it was sent, and on and on. All of this is boiled down to a single “spam score” that determines whether you see the email or not.
The fact that you can open your inbox and not be buried under a million junk emails is arguably the greatest, quietest triumph of AI in modern life. The absence of a problem is the surest sign the AI is working.
5. It’s Your New, Annoyingly Confident Intern
Finally, we get to the one everyone is actually talking about. When we say “AI” in 2025, we mean Generative AI: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and the rest.
The public conversation is pure hype and panic. It’s either a god-like oracle or it’s coming for all our jobs.
The reality, as usual, is far more mundane—and far more interesting. If you want to know how AI is really changing daily work, you just have to look at how people are actually using it. And it’s not to write novels or run their companies.
They’re using it to:
- “make tickets more professional, fix grammar, spelling and punctuation”.
- “outline ideas” or get the “groundwork on a new topic” before a big meeting.
- Get a “starting point” for a complex technical problem. One 30-year data analytics veteran described using it to find a specific DAX function in Power BI. He doesn’t ask it to write the whole report; he uses it to get that “OH! That’s the function I need!” moment.
- “writing little scripts or automating things” that have been on the to-do list for years.
- And for deeply personal tasks, like the person who used it to help get a thyroid cancer diagnosis, or another who used it to finally identify and order the right replacement wheels for their dishwasher.
As that data veteran put it, “AI is a tool like a hammer or a saw… It’s one of many things in our toolbox to help us get a job done faster. It’s not the end all be all.”
It’s not a replacement. It’s an assistant.
I like to think of it as a new, annoyingly confident intern. It’s incredibly fast, knows a lot about everything, but has zero real-world experience, no common sense, and will “hallucinate,” or confidently lie, right to your face.
The reason so many people are frustrated with AI is that they’re treating it like an oracle, when they should be treating it like an intern. You don’t ask your intern to finalize the quarterly report and send it to the CEO. You ask them to get you a first draft, find some research, and proofread a memo.
Most of the “rookie mistakes” people make with AI stem from this exact misunderstanding.

This brings us to the most human question of all: creativity. Is AI the end of it?.
The early research is fascinating. One study found something that should make us all pause. They gave writers a creative storytelling task, splitting them into “high-creativity” and “low-creativity” groups (based on a standard test).
For the “high-creativity” writers, AI offered no benefit. Their stories were already great.
But for the “low-creativity” writers? When given AI-generated ideas, their stories were judged to be up to 22.6% more enjoyable and 15.2% less boring. The AI, the researchers concluded, “effectively equalizes the creativity scores across less and more creative writers”.
The biggest change AI is bringing to our creative lives may not be the “robot artist” we fear. It may be a tool that raises the creative floor for everyone. It’s giving more people the power to “build out all the small personal projects” they’ve always wanted to build but never knew how.
It’s an equalizer. It’s a collaborator. And it’s an intern. And it’s already here, woven so deeply into our lives, we barely notice it’s there at all.
