Capstone

If you are able to survive the global pandemic without periodic anxiety, I welcome you. My pendulum oscillates between “We’ll get through this” and “We’re all doomed” – often several times a day. That’s why I’m increasingly looking for helpful (and cheap) coping tools, be it free games to keep myself from things or free books that teach me how to keep stress at bay.

Today I have three such books, followed by a series of science fiction novels that sound like ideal escapism (if you can overcome the title). Here is the selection for self-help:

  • How not to worry: the remarkable truth of how a small change can help you to reduce stress and enjoy life moreby Paul McGee. Free for Kindle, free for Android (via Google Play). List price: $ 22.
  • Unravel your life: How external order leads to inner peaceby Gill Hasson. Free for Kindle, free for Android (via Google Play). List price: $ 18.
  • Overcome Fear: Soothing Ways to Get Rid of Stress and Worries and Live a Quieter Lifeby Gill Hasson. Free for Kindle, free for Android (via Google Play). List price: $ 18.

You will of course need an Amazon or Google account to get the appropriate versions of these books that can be read on all compatible devices.

Another great way to relieve your brain of stress is to get away from fiction. Publisher Tor’s The eBook of the month club is completely freeand this month’s giveaway is pretty cute. These are the first four novellas in Martha Wells’ Murderbot Diaries series. But it is structured somewhat differently: from today you will receive one book a day.

Gate books

The goal, of course, is to delight you so that you can buy the first full-length novel in the series to come out in a few weeks. However, for now, enjoy these highly rated freebies, which usually cost $ 4 to $ 11.

By the way, they are provided DRM-free in the ePub or Mobi format of your choice. The latter can be loaded laterally in Kindles and Kindle apps.

Apple AirPods: $ 122

Apple’s second-generation AirPods have long been priced at $ 139, with occasional drops to $ 135. While that’s better than the $ 159 list price, it’s still expensive. Here’s the best deal I’ve seen so far: For a limited time and while stocks last, Electronics Basket (via eBay) has it 2nd generation Apple AirPods with case for $ 121.99.

To be honest, I really like AirPods. They’re comfortable (at least in my ears), they sound great, and they’re great for phone calls. On the other hand, they do not offer any noise cancellation functions, are not sweat-proof and the price is still ridiculous.

But $ 122 is so much better than $ 159. If you’ve planned your time hoping for a reasonable discount, you’re good to go.

Sonos Playbar: $ 449

David Carnoy / CNET

I bet you spend a lot more time watching TV these days, which may make you seriously think about adding a soundbar. The Sonos Playbar is a top choice, but yes, the price of $ 699.

Less yes: For a limited time and while stocks last, WorldWideStereo overtook the manufacturer via eBay Sonos Playbar for $ 449, the lowest price I can remember.

As this is factory certified, it contains sales packaging with all accessories and a one-year guarantee. In other words, it is literally as good as new.

At that price, it’s only $ 50 more than the regular price of the Sonos Beam, which offers advanced voice command features, but nowhere near as much bass.

However, $ 449 is still very expensive for a soundbar, but saving $ 250 isn’t a reason to sneeze.
