In the middle of the coronavirus pandemicthat has seen practical every major sports league postponedThe 2020 NFL draft has come to save us at a time when we all feel a little hungry for sports. The first “virtual design“As it is called, it takes place in the US – 60 NFL prospects zoom or skype from home, and trainers and owners send emails or phone calls from lavish lounges to bare offices.
In 2020 things look dramatically different: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell reads every selection from his house, in front of a gallery of fans who zoom and cheer (or booing) along. The whole thing is kind of awkward, kind of weird, and … kind of still nice of wonderful and sometimes incredibly healthy. Fans take a look at the homes of head coaches and owners and watch players react live to the news about their designs from their kitchen or living room.
Our friends at CBS Sports have All the information you need to get involved, but if you just want to see what got everyone talking, go ahead, because Twitter was very, very here for the Coronavirus Zoom Draft.
Before kick-off, it was the acting head coach of the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, Andy Reid, who made the headlines with his draft day ensemble.
The first choice, Joe Burrows, went to the Cincinnati Bengals and is already called “The Tiger King”. Some have made a temporary observation about his mother that resembles a certain cool cat.
Going to number 1 is a big feat, but Twitter was hung on something else in Burrows’ house: the admittedly rather … eye-catching … curtains.
Taking a look at people’s houses feels a little strange now that I’ve had time to think about it, and it’s even stranger when an entire nation sees your freshly upholstered couch. Twitter sounded really good in the interior.
Fully “virtual” design does not mean quick design just to be clear.
The strangest aspect of the night was the visible delay in moving from a draft draft to the player’s house – where had the player apparently not yet been informed of his choice? It was bizarre and funny to see how little reaction to some of the top draft decisions was just sitting on a couch and looking at an iPhone.
In fifth place, the Dolphins selected Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, and Commissioner Goodell did not understand the debate exactly.
The Chargers fans didn’t even bother to show up.
When Dave Gettleman, the general manager of the New York Giants, appeared on the screen, he started putting on a mask in his own home.
Gettleman might have been the meme MVP for the evening, but there was a good reason for the mask, which was overlooked by the quick Twitter crowd.
Wait … where does the billionaire of the Dallas Cowboys Jerry Jones come from?
I agree, we have a virtual draft every year. Let’s keep the momentum going in 2021, team.
Rounds two and three of the NFL draft will be broadcast on Friday and Saturday. With CBS Sports’ huge guide, you can find out exactly where and how to watch.
