17 Best AI SEO Tools in 2024: A Comprehensive Guide for Marketers

Before I even got the chance to write this, I had to put a lot of thought into which AI SEO tool I could try out first.

At the end of that weekend of testing, I learned that many of the popular tools were ill-fitting for my SEO workflows and processes – the perfect AI SEO tool doesn’t exist for everybody.

The right choice depends on your unique objectives, processes, and budget.

With this guide, you can make an informed decision: understand the basics of AI in SEO, and the way it helps writers and copywriters. You’ll find out how to use it productively.

I will point out the core characteristics to look for in each of the tools you are considering, as well as what I’ve learned about the best solutions after my testing.

And whether you’re a freelancer, in-house marketer or consultant, this guide can equip you with the know-how to seek out the AI SEO tool that will get you there.

How Marketers Use AI

Here is an input written to sound more human, taking citations and quotes into account:Â Â I’m a content marketer. I use a mix of AI tools for research, brainstorming, project management and even reporting.

That is also how AI is currently employed to help digital marketers create content, such as copy for social posts, blogs and websites.

A big caveat is that AI-produced text is rarely ready to publish: it’s a good idea to make sure it goes through human review.

The upshot is: rather than being a battle, AI versus humans, the two can complement one another.

What Is AI SEO?

What exactly is AI SEO? Answering this question might be the key to unlocking thousands of comments and hundreds, if not thousands, of hours wasted by website owners. AI SEO pricing varies greatly, ranging from cheap (or free) to highly expensive “white-hat” services – but the essence of all these AI tools is effectively the same. To put it simply, AI SEO is a search engine optimisation strategy that uses ‘artificial intelligence’ (AI) to analyse the performance of an individual web page – be it a blog post or landing page – and make recommendations to help it secure a high ranking on search engine results pages. This will be done by improving the target page’s ranking factors – things such as backlinks, keywords and user experience.

At its heart, AI allows tech companies to use advanced algorithms – or programmatic decision structures that include machine learning and natural language processing, among other capabilities – to process and interpret huge amounts of data.

This allows SEO professionals to optimize their SEO strategies and automate specific tasks.

cent of bloggers and SEO experts say AI and automation made an impact on their SEO strategy in 2023 compared to the previous year.

AI isn’t replacing human effort, it’s amplifying it with smart automation. It’s giving us insights and optimisation opportunities that might not otherwise ever be unearthed by skillful humans.

How to Use AI for SEO

Brainstorm topics based on your target audience.

Monitor search data to uncover trends.

Find keywords based on your chosen topics.

Speed up the research process.

Generate content outlines.

Identify opportunities to optimize content.

Analyze KPIs such as page views, clicks, and time on page.

Generate structured data and schema markup.

Find link-building opportunities.

Detect and fix technical issues, such as broken links.

Our latest State of AI report revealed that, on average, marketers see a time-saving benefit of 12.5 hours per week when using artificial intelligence (taking into consideration all invested time). That’s equivalent to an extra 25-26 working days per year. Let’s look at how you can use AI for SEO.

Building a Smarter Content Strategy

AI’s ability to slice and dice data can help you turbo-boost your content strategy, focusing on what matters most to those you’re trying to reach.

For example, deploy an AI text analysis toolkit to uncover enlightening insights from survey data, customer reviews, interviews and sales-call notes for messaging.

This kind of information helps you know what high-value keywords and topic clusters to target, as well as what gaps, opportunities and trends might exist too.

From there, you’ll be able to create a focused content calendar aimed at high-opportunity terms, and showcase content formats that will most likely resonate with your audience.

Automating Repetitive Tasks

While you should make sure you’re putting your SEO strategies into action, use AI to automate rote tasks that are hard to manage at scale, including:

Site crawls and technical audits across millions of URLs.

Continuous rank tracking across devices and locations.

Backlink monitoring and opportunity identification.

In the example, an AI-powered content optimisation widget might propose changes for the writer to consider, but she would still need to screen them and decide what happens next.

Before publishing your article, speed up search visability of your site by suggesting the optimal anchor and automatically creating internal links to your website with the help of AI SEO tool.

It’ll also improve ‌site structure and user experience, and trickle link equity throughout the site.

Since people like me often struggle to stay ahead of Google’s algorithm changes, I was interested to learn how this new batch of AI SEO tools could help optimise my SEO workflows and create better results.

But bear in mind that not all AI SEO systems are equal, and I based my testing on the following factors:

Evidence of adaptive, true AI and machine learning: Where possible, in writing this list, I’ve given clear preference to tools that employ advanced technologies such as natural language processing, neural networks and the like, rather than overly simplistic rules-based systems or legacy software reworks.

Intelligent augmentation, not automation: The proliferation of AI tools in SEO doesn’t necessarily imply they will completely automate certain SEO tasks but I paid closer attention to those tools that augmented my work and strategic decision-making. The best AI SEO tools that can positively augment my skillset are those that delivers an intelligent automation where tools that try to replace my actions with a full autonomous process cannot.

Specialisation for SEO-use Ccses: In response to the multidisciplinary and multifaceted nature of SEO, I also expanded my testing to encompass tools designed specifically to support core SEO workflows, such as keyword research, content optimisation, technical audits and rank tracking, as well as AI writers and writing assistants.

Good integrations: Any AI SEO product you choose has to work with the CMS tools, analytics stacks and other major marketing technologies you’re already using. This factor was crucial to me, so I prioritised solutions that had robust integration with a combination of APIs, native connectors, or through third-party partnerships. This functionality is a workflow that makes it relatively easy to establish systematic topical authority for a huge potential corpus of material through relatively little effort.

This calendar really helps people who are having difficulty planning out a content roadmap.

While OutRanking offers the ‘starter plan’, this is limited to five SEO documents, and their best value is the SEO Writer Plan.

These documents are then part of an array of plans that include 15 documents, automated optimisation, and internal linking, among other elements, thus giving the website a more sophisticated tool for creating and strategising SEO content.

What I love: OutRanking helps you build a prioritised editorial calendar that maps to your SEO goals. It tackles knowledge-gap analysis for difficult-to-conquer topical authority (ha!) tasks.

Price: $219 per month.

AI SEO Tools, content editor

It’s a complete AI program for creating content that’s as easy-to-read as possible while still ranking well in search engines using something called ‘organic’ SEO.

The biggest selling point here is its ability to generate detailed and informative content outlines for top search performance.

Surfer analyses popular content to determine key elements such as the number of topics covered, weight distribution and number of semantically related words to outrank competitors.

This data-driven approach provides a solid strategic foundation for content creation.

Surfer’s AI capabilities take full content generation to the next level, which is particularly useful for those who require multi-lingual content management needs and want to optimise global content workflows.

In the tool, this ‘V’ action takes place in two stages: an outline to review, then a full draft. In doing so the model puts a valuable and often neglected part of the process – quality control and course-correction – in front of the effort to write.

Surfer AI will automatically analyse the SERP and decide the most effective tone for each article, or it will fit your blog tone.

A single focus keyword constructs a strong foundation from which to build SEO-friendly content.

An in-built editor takes this a step further, giving you real-time feedback on how well your content matches up to SEO criteria while you write.

It excels at finding hidden keywords that are relevant and valuable By contrast, Scalenut’s keyword research capabilities are particularly strong, surfacing relevant, high-value keywords and relevant metrics like search volumes and competition levels.

A writer working from SERP-based outlines, with real-time feedback on SEO optimisation by a post editor, is a compelling workflow towards getting your content seen.

This is the reason why Scalenut is a potent tool for not just handling key aspects of an overall SEO approach, but for being able to execute it via an AI assistant.

All of this technical heavy-lifting is done automatically by NitroPack: compressing and resizing images, caching and optimising the code.

All of these things come together to help pages load fast on every screen, which in turn improves ranking and user experience.

T he main advantage of NitroPack is that it works as a plugin for most already-existing web hosting platforms and content management system tools.

It is also easy to install it by following the given document that provides the user a guidance to tune up his/her website.

The site will automate a lot of these technical SEO tasks for them, freeing the content creator to focus on creating content, and the result will be that the site performs a lot better.

What I like about this tool: The keyword research tool is great for identifying long-tail keywords and determining search intent.

14. MarketMuse

Price: Starts at $149 per month

AI SEO Tools, AI content workflows

I started to use MarketMuse, an artificial intelligence (AI) content intelligence tool which learns from vast amounts of online content to optimise copy while boosting SEO.

At its heart, MarketMuse is powered by NLP, more specifically advanced topic modelling, which gauges the keyword relevance through the use of AI to parse big data.

This ensures comprehensive content coverage and helps creators address user intent more effectively.

This evaluation is excellent at measuring content, for instance at taking a piece of existing output and measuring its gaps, redundancies and opportunities. An example is a content audit or strategic planning.

With MarketMuse, writers get a lengthy brief of core topics, question paraphrasing writerly intent, and keywords, helping them to shape content for user intent and all the best practices of SEO.

Real-time suggestions about improving the structure of a piece of content, using the right words and phrases, and optimising it for search engines are another unique selling point here. These suggestions appear at the bottom of your screen while you write.

Moreover, MarketMuse conducts in-depth SERP analysis, meaning that it analyses search engine results pages to see what content works for certain queries.

This allows users to benchmark their content against competitors and create more competitive material.

What I really like about it: Using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technology, MarketMuse provides a robust platform for content research, creation, optimisation and performance monitoring. The seamless integration of all these steps into a single platform provides content marketers and SEO professionals with an all-in-one system for effortlessly creating SEO-effective content.

15. Content Harmony

Price: starts at $99 per month

AI SEO Tools, content briefs

With the helpful guidance of AI, Content Harmony creates briefings that go far beyond what was previously possible, taking into account search trends, user intent, and competitive landscapes.

The composite briefs include seed keywords, subject-area themes, questions to address, and competitive insights from highest-performing content on the niche.

This second step ensures that you’ve actually laid a good foundation to build on, incorporating core SEO elements from the outset.

Content Harmony’s AI undertakes rigorous competitive analysis too, by looking at the highest-ranking pages in search engine results for your target keywords, and giving users insights into what kind of content ranks well.

Additionally, it does what is known as content gap analysis, finding where a user’s content breaks down when compared with its competition.

This creates an oinstead, pportunifitsty for a content creator to fill that gap and (through strategic positioning) put themself in a better position than their competition.

What I like: Besides publishing units, Content Harmony ‌also has a workflow management feature to help your content team work, starting from a simple idea and up to the publishing act, with task assignment, tracked progress and collaboration modules.

16. Link Whisper

Price: starts at $77 per month

AI SEO Tools, link statistics

Internal linking is a crucial aspect of search engine optimization (SEO), and that is where Link Whisper comes in. It allows you to make internal linking as easy as possible, and leverages your power in the search engine result pages (SERPs). The utility of Link Whisper as a WordPress plugin becomes apparent when we use your screenshot. My top internal linking said it would create over 10 billion linking opportunities.

This is especially useful on blogs or sites that build up large archives, where we can maintain a robust internal linking scheme for SEO and navigation purposes.

It allowed us to reduce the time spent on internal linking drastically, no longer spending many hours on it, but instead just a few minutes.

The Link Whisper setup process is straightforward and easy to execute. After activation, the Link Whisper dashboard is beautifully incorporated into the WordPress toolset and simply looks nice. It handles all the heavy-lifting implicitly. Furthermore, this level of ease renders it relatively approachable for even less than highly technical users.

Link Whisper does a great job of suggesting smart internal links. The ‘Link Whisper’ section in the can show contextually relevant internal links after it scans the rest of your site.

This forces the content to stay relevant, linking it into threads together, which increases SEO and helps users find related content.

The plugin’s suggestions are almost always relevant – often suggesting internal links, if the content is keyword-heavy, in exactly the right places. Almost without fail, the suggestions align nicely with the content, but every so often, they will suggest less relevant suggestions that users can manually exclude.

What I like about it: This is something that’s unique to LinkWhisper, and why I really like it. It allows bulk edits: if you go back and update an older blog post and also want to add a bunch of internal links, this will allow you to add them to multiple other posts in a matter of seconds.

17. Frase

Price: Starts at $15 per month

AI SEO Tools, outline creator

Frase is the easiest way to create and optimise your content.

It’s also very useful for content marketers, search-engine optimisers and writers who need to produce great SEO content without – as Moz says – ‘wasting any precious writing energy’.

Along with basic formatting, Frase brings several ‘power-ups’ to improve content quality and SEO performance.

It’s a content research tool powered by AI that helps you find information on any topic and summarise main points from the highest-ranking pages.

Frase assists writers in crafting comprehensive and competitive content.

On top of that, it offers SEO content tools that assess your drafts against top-ranking content. The assessment provides practical tips on how to boost your SEO, from keywords to headers and readability options.

One of Frase’s most compelling features is its Content Briefs which help writers organize their content by suggesting outlines, keywords and competitor analyses.

This feature ensures that content is well-planned and aligned with SEO best practices.

What I like: Frase’s tool suggests questions commonly asked about your topic, so you’re more likely to find and answer the questions that matter to users. This makes your articles more useful, boosting user engagement and satisfaction.

Free AI SEO Tools

But, if you want to get started without any additional costs, make sure to visit my favourite free AI SEO tools that boost your SERPs and save time.

Note: each of these tools has a paid, premium version — but each one will give you something useful for free as well.

ChatGPT

AI SEO Tools, blog post ideas

ChatGPT is perhaps the most well-known of all AI-powered chatbots, largely because it is useful for many things – which includes SEO tasks.

Still, while I wouldn’t use ChatGPT for long-form writing, I’ve started to utilise it as a tool for getting out of the doldrums of writer’s block – say, for ideation, keyword exploration and a quick brainstorm for titles and meta descriptions.

But remember, what you get out is what you put in, and it goes the same with generative AI. To get better at ChatGPT, check out our 70 AI prompts for marketers.

What I like: Saving conversations by topic/project keeps stuff organised.

Perplexity AI

AI SEO Tools, PDF summary and insights

One of the things that I really love using for my research because it actually has a confusion engine – you can upload PDFs and it gives you a summary of the gist of the PDF, and it works really well for paragraphs. And the free version allows you to upload three things a day, and you can say, ‘Follow up with these three questions I have about this overall file that I’m uploading today.

What I do like: the fact that you can specify, through a focus feature, exactly what kinds of sources you want the tool to pull from when producing an answer.

QuillBot AI

AI SEO Tools, paraphrasing tool

Need to quickly paraphrase online? Try QuillBot, a free-to-use paraphrasing software that lets you rewrite up to 125 words at once. You can also generate or summarise text with QuillBot for free, but only under the free plan, which sets a limit of 50 AI paraphrase requests per 24 hours.

It’s one of those little paring knives I’m using when I have writer’s block, or when I need to summarise something into a short article for a social post or ‘content marketing’ copy. What digital literacy might look like if we reflected on and utilised common ways of doing things online.

Liked: Because it works as a Chrome extension, you don’t have to toggle back and forth between tabs.

Level Up Your Marketing With AI SEO Tools

As I tested the different tools in the list above, what really struck me was how many different things an AI SEO tool can actually do for you – from assisted composition of text to general content optimising.

My favourite of the tools I tested was HubSpot’s AI Tools. It was the most fully integrated, from optimised copy creation tools to an AI tool that evaluated your entire site.

Its capacity as a manual/AI toggle is particularly useful; it helps me preserve the creative layer while profiting from AI efficiency.

Also, it was great that certain tools, e.g. LinkWhisper for efficient internal linking, could meet some of the SEO challenges that I’ve been embroiled in for years.

They’re big time savers, the importance of which I hadn’t quite grasped until I took the plunge.

In the end, I‘ve learned that while AI SEO tools can be amazingly useful, they work best when you use the prompts to add a bit of extra skill, rather than to take away from it.

What’s needed is figuring out where there’s most value in making creative decisions where those capabilities converge, and how to use AI as a tool to enhance your thinking and create more flexible ways to do it.
